Swimming Pool Pump Tips

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

A swimming pump should be able to circulate pool water at least every 24 hours, but its best to run every 8 hours.

Most existing pool pumps are oversized for the size of the pool and plumbing, which reduces filter effectiveness and causes more wear and tear on plumbing.

A pump of only 1/2 horsepower is needed for an average 1-1/4 inch to 1-1/2 inch plumbing pipes. Most pool owners have larger pumps, which dramatically increases electrical pumping costs. For example, a 1/2 horsepower pump will cost about $300 per year to run, while a 3/4 horsepower pump will cost $450.

Swimming Pool Deck Types

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Your swimming pool deck is an important part of your backyard landscape. Choosing a style that fits with the elements of your yard can be challenging yet satisfying once in place. There are several types of surface materials to choose from so you should be able to find the type of deck that fits your design.

Concrete – The most common surface is inexpensive and easy to match other materials that may surround your pool. It comes in a variety of colors, smooth finishes, stamped or seeded.

Natural Stone – This type is great for creating a natural look around your pool. It comes in sandstone, granite and marble which creates a natural feel to the landscape.

Brick – Another common material for pool decks, it comes in many colors and lasts many years. The downside is brick absorbs sunlight therefore can become very hot. A hot surface can be an uncomfortable surface to walk and sunbath on.

There so many types to choose from.  Find one that is economical and versatile for your needs. Choose a style that fits with the rest of the elements in your yard and creates a unified look and feel for the space.

Salt Water Swimming Pool – How does it work?

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Most pool owners assume that switching to a salt filtration system will turn their water salty – you know like the ocean. Well that’s not true.  There is not enough salt in a salt water filtration system to even notice it in your pool water.  The level is usually below what most swimmers can even taste.

Salt water pools make their own chlorine.  First the salt water breaks down in to sodium and chloride.  It does this through several pieces of equipment the salt generator cell, salt control system and power supply. Inside the salt cell are many plates all stacked and charged opposite of the neighboring stack, so one salt cell plate would have a negative the next cell is a positive charge. When the salt water passes through the cell a process known as electrolysis breaks the salt down into chlorine on one side of the plates and caustic soda and hydrogen at the other. The chlorine effectively super chlorinates or shocks the water as it is created and kills off any bacteria, while a residual amount is retained to continue to sanitize.

There are many benefits of owning a salt system. You will never need to purchase chlorine tablets again since the system makes its own chlorine. Pool owners don’t have to touch chlorine anymore. Another benefit is that salt water is better for your skin, swimmers report that is softer and less harsh to their skin. Pool owners don’t have to touch chlorine anymore.
